About Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter

On August 22, 1983, Ernestine's Women's Shelter opened after more than two years of planning by the Women's Emergency Shelter Committee, which was founded in April 1981 by concerned residents and representatives from key social-service organizations in Etobicoke.

Today, Ernestine's, named for Ernestine Van Marle, social justice advocate and former executive director of Rexdale Community Information and Legal Services, continues to provide essential services to survivors of violence through direct service programs for both individuals and families.

Ernestine's offers counselling, support and referrals, as well as unique responsive and individualized service to each and every woman and child who passes through its doors.

Ernestine's also works in cooperation with other local organizations to share resources and enhance community building. One such initiative is a food bank for ex-residents, operated in cooperation with the North York Harvest Food Bank.

Ernestine's continues to grow with the support of its staff, board members, community and other generous individuals and corporations.
